Advice for new dads from a veteran (who is still learning)
Change every diaper.
That’s my first piece of advice for one of my best friends, Muppus, who just had a healthy baby boy. (We call him Muppus because that was the name of his band in high school.)
Over the river, through the woods, down the highway and off on a plane we go. Holiday travel season is here and it’s an extra special one for me because it’s my baby’s first Thanksgiving. Not only are we travelling to Grandma’s house, but we’re off to aunts’, uncles’ and cousins’ houses as well – at least I don’t have to do the cooking this year.

Was my wife, Dixie, helping me or suckering me? It’s a debate that goes on to this day, but regardless of the answer, I stand behind the following advice for every new dad: Change every diaper.
That’s the advice Dixie gave me when our first son, Jake, was born. That was 17 years ago. At the time, Dixie and I agreed to share all the responsibilities for raising our baby. We were equal partners, interchangeable in every area – except one.
“Pass him over,” Dixie said whenever baby Jake started to cry. “He wants the boob.”
