With the calendar flipping to September, it’s just about time to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. But before we watch the leaves turn and see stores offer pumpkin spice everything, we still get to celebrate Labor Day weekend! Here are a few tips to help you and your family have a safe and fun holiday weekend.
Coming from Southern California, I started my journey as a Safe Kids intern in D.C in June. One of the things that surprised me was how the city’s streets felt almost like a ballet with pedestrians, cars, trucks, buses and bicyclists (and people mounting their bikes on the front of buses) weaving in and out around each other.
Every 33 seconds, a child in the United States is involved in a car crash. That’s a scary statistic. Worse yet, more than a third of kids who died in crashes were completely unrestrained: no car seat, no seat belt, nothing. The Safe Kids Worldwide network of member countries gathered in Finland today in advance of the 12th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion. It is a delight to see old friends who have been working together for years, and new members joining us for the first time.
Every year, on the first Wednesday of October, schools around the world celebrate International Walk to School Day. For the past 16 years, Safe Kids has teamed up with FedEx to host events in celebration of this day to teach children how to walk to school safely. We hope your kids get to attend one of these great events. But, if they don’t, it’s still an important time to talk to them about how to walk safely. In the United States alone, 44 children are hit by a car every day. We’ve created some helpful, and fun, items below to help you teach your kids how to walk safely.

When I was younger, I remember going through fire drills at my school, all the way from elementary school through college. We’d go over the plan with our teachers, line up at the door and quickly and orderly head to a pre-determined location. Even today, our office will periodically run fire drills to make sure the smoke alarms are in working order and so that everyone in the building knows what to do in case of an emergency.
