It’s been almost exactly one year since I first set foot in the Safe Kids office and accepted a position to join the team. And what a year it’s been.
I don’t currently have any children, but I do plan on having some in the far-off future. And I want to be a good mom.
Working at Safe Kids as a pre-mom has opened my eyes to the shocking world of child injury. I’ve worked my way through a bunch of topics – some of which I have a general knowledge of like sports safety and medication safety; and others risk areas I didn’t even know were a hazard.
Suspense may be important in a movie, but not when you are buying products for your young children. A high chair, crib or even a swing set for the back yard can be among the most important investments in your career as a parent. But there's a way to take the suspense out of shopping.

Over the river, through the woods, down the highway and off on a plane we go. Holiday travel season is here and it’s an extra special one for me because it’s my baby’s first Thanksgiving. When Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed SB1152, a bill requiring kids to be in a rear-facing child safety seat up to age 2, Pennsylvania became the fourth state to pass the standard set by the American Academy of Pediatrics. A rear-facing car seat is advisable for infants and toddlers because their “head heavy” body requires extra support for their head, neck and spine. Kids under the age of two are 75% less likely to sustain serious injury or die when they are in a rear-facing car seat"1".

The USA excels as a world leader in so many ways—just look at how our athletes are doing in Rio De Janeiro. We know that we are not gold, silver or bronze at everything, but that makes us even more determined to do better.
One of the areas where we can perform better is protecting kids on the move, in cars and on the road. If you think we’re at the gold medal level, here’s a pop quiz: which country has performed better in improving its road crash death rate: Slovenia or the U.S.? How about Spain or our country?
