Washington, D.C. – The increase of medicines in the home since 1980 is staggering: Today there are three times as many prescriptions filled in the U.S. and five times as many dollars spent on over-the-counter medicines. With more medicine in the home than ever before, Safe Kids Worldwide is putting parents on alert to be vigilant about protecting their children from medicine poisoning.
Safe Kids Worldwide has a network of 400 coalitions around the United States, who work every day to keep kids in their communities healthy and safe. As part of our Safe Kids in Action series, Safe Kids will feature the incredible coordinators, teachers, nurses, doctors, first responders, business leaders, legislators and parents who make up our coalitions. At age two, I had been left alone for about a minute when I was discovered sitting in my parents' bedroom with a bottle of aspirin -- cap off, bottle upended, contents strewn about. (Clever girl!)

Earlier today, celebrities, parents and hundreds of kids celebrated Safe Kids Day, presented by Nationwide. This LA event at Smashbox Studios was just one of 223 Safe Kids Day events taking place across the United States this spring to raise awareness and funds for Safe Kids Worldwide.
Amber Masters’ descent into heroin addiction began when she was playing high school soccer in Anaheim, Calif. A star prospect, Amber collided with another player and injured her already hyperextended knee. A doctor prescribed the opioid Norco. She soon obtained OxyContin from a friend, and ultimately started using and even dealing heroin. Amber introduced her brother to the drug, leading to his death from an overdose. She is now in recovery.
