On most days, the safest way for kids to get to school is on a school bus. Sadly on October 26, 6-year-old twin boys Xzavier and Mason, and their 9-year-old sister, Alivia Stahl, were exceptions to that rule. They were on their way to Mentone Elementary School in rural Rochester, Indiana. Their bus was traveling northbound on a two-lane highway with a 55-mph speed limit. The school bus driver stopped and lowered the stop arm, its blinking lights signaling that he was picking up students. Along with a fourth child, the three kids started to cross the street to board the bus.
Why You Should Care About School Bus Passing
Five-year-old Maliyah Steadman was getting off her school bus in Shreveport, Louisiana when she was suddenly hit by a car. Even though the bus’s extended crossing arm was activated and it’s against the law, the driver went around the car directly in front of him that had stopped for the bus and hit Maliyah. In critical condition, the young girl was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully Maliyah was released three months later, but is still struggling with lasting effects of a brain injury.
Heading Back to School
Back to school was one of the most exciting times for me when I was younger. I was always so excited to see what a new school year would bring and the fun activities that I would get to experience with my classmates. What I would be most excited for was to get back with all of my classmates that I missed all summer long.

Even today, more than 10 years ago, I will never forget my daily bus rides to Oak Street Elementary School in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. I remember it so vividly because we buckled up with horrendously colored maroon and Kelly-green colored seat belts. Each day I would buckle up and desperately trying to hide the colors from view with a sweater or backpack.
The beginning of the school year can be overwhelming and exciting at the same time, both for kids and parents. Here are a few ways to make safety a part of your back-to-school plan.
GETTING TO SCHOOL AND BACK
Back to school time was one of my favorite times of the year as a kid. A new teacher, different classmates, a new desk, sometimes a new school. It was like a fresh start.
With all these changes, back to school can be a good time to remind your kids how to walk safely. Whether they’re walking to the bus stop, walking in the parking lot, or walking the entire way to school, all kids are a pedestrian at some point during the school day.
This week, 49 children and staff from Finch Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia were taken to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning. Record levels of carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas known as the "silent killer," were circulating in the school as a result of a faulty furnace.

Because of this question, it’s especially inspiring to hear when Washington actually respond to our views on an issue and changes its mind. Our right to “petition the government” and express our opinions is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and the First Amendment.
If you have ever lived in or experienced city life, you know that there are other alternatives to owning a car. When I was younger, between the ages of 6 and 14, I was lucky enough to live in Paris, France. Needless to say, Paris is a busy city and many people walk to get where they are going.
