I am a parent of two beautiful young girls; and, my promise to them, above all other responsibilities in my life, is to protect them. It’s a non-negotiable obligation. It’s my highest priority. It’s an unflappable commitment. Period. So, it’s that mission, goal and purpose that lead me to do everything I can to protect my children from foreseeable harm.
On Saturday, April 5 more than 450 families and kids of all ages swept through the Lot in West Hollywood for the first ever Safe Kids Day in Los Angeles to help celebrate kids, prevent injuries and save lives.
The fun-filled event featured tons of celebrity guests, including Drew Barrymore and Ciara, who delighted kids by reading a few children’s books as part of story time; Vanna White, who invited kids to spin the wheel at a bike safety carnival booth; and Tina Charles and Matthew Hatchette, who played basketball with kids and offered tips at the sports safety center.
"Mommy, I have a great idea. After school, you can pick me up and we can walk to town and get some ice cream."
My 4-year-old son, Winston, says this nearly every day during our morning commute.
It sounds so Mayberry, doesn't it?
Mind you, my family lives in a suburb of DC that has 1 million people and growing. And my husband and I live a pretty hectic life (as do most parents, I think). We both work outside the home and our days start early and end late.
Every hour of every day, a teen pedestrian is killed or injured in the U.S.
Washington, D.C.– New research released today from Safe Kids Worldwide revealed alarming news: 40 percent of teens have been hit or nearly hit by a car, bike or motorcycle while walking.
The report, “Teens on the Move” made possible with support from FedEx®, explores walking behaviors of 1,040 teens ages 13 to 19.
Real life (if somewhat shameful) stories about raising Winston
I never imagined the level of deception that would be involved in parenting. I knew my husband and I would fully support Santa, the Easter bunny, and the tooth fairy.
What I didn't expect were the small dishonesties that help us get through the day.

All donations go to support our work in keeping all kids safe from injury, from providing bike helmets and smoke alarms to those in need to educating parents on how to install their car seat correctly or keep their kids safe from hidden hazards in the home.
Here are smart tips on how to get children to and from school safely, whether they walk, ride the bus, carpool or bike.
Coming from Southern California, I started my journey as a Safe Kids intern in D.C in June. One of the things that surprised me was how the city’s streets felt almost like a ballet with pedestrians, cars, trucks, buses and bicyclists (and people mounting their bikes on the front of buses) weaving in and out around each other.
My two boys love quarters. We don’t give them an allowance yet, but for the past few years we have used quarters as an incentive for doing things around the house like feeding the dog, picking up toys and emptying the dishwasher. My wife, Lauren, even pays them a quarter if they fart on me. Needless to say, Stephen, 6, and Thomas, 4, love these quarters, they save these quarters and they only spend them on the ultimate prize - Legos.
What an amazing week!
To raise awareness for the 500 children who die every day on the world’s roads – that’s one every three minutes – we participated in the United Nations Global Road Safety Week’s #slowdown campaign placing a special focus on how speed impacts the safety of children.
