Here’s your safety assignment for the week:
Grab your helmets and take a bike ride with your kids. Why? Well, beyond the obvious reasons, it’s because Safe Kids has a new way for you to evaluate how bike friendly your city or town is for kids.
What would you think if you were walking or biking in your city and saw a group of people linking hands in the middle of the street? That’s exactly what happened on Second Avenue in New York City on a Tuesday morning in August 2017. Bike safety advocates were holding hands to make two points. First, that the city must continue making progress on bike and pedestrian safety in school zones. And second, that protected bike lanes are proven lifesavers. Commuters biking to work and school showed their appreciation for these advocates with cheers and high-fives.

I still remember getting my first bike. It was a lovely fall day, and I was celebrating my 5th birthday at the local park when my parents wheeled it over. And it was beautiful – a light pink frame and white tires with a white basket on the front adorned with purple, blue and yellow daisies, and shimmering multicolored streamers flowing from the handlebars.
Have you ever seen a bike train? Picture lots of excited little kids perched on bicycles, scooters, skateboards and anything else with wheels, anxiously awaiting a signal from a parent or teacher to start pedaling and rolling to school.
On Wednesday, May 8, these bike trains will be in full force at more than 150 events throughout the country as students, parents and educators join together to raise awareness about bike safety on the second annual National Bike to School Day.
There is nothing that I can remember loving more as a kid than riding my bike with all of my friends. Every ride was an adventure and we would stay out as long as we could.
Now as an adult, I still hop on a bike every opportunity I get – and it’s especially fun to ride with my nephews, Jake, 4, and Nathan, 7, who are actually starting to keep up with me, which is saying something.

Mrs. Davis is an exemplary person! She is not just a crossing guard, but a supervisor. Technically she shouldn't even be going to help with the crossing station but due to staffing issues with crossing guards, she is regularly covering different areas. Mrs. Davis has phenomenal skills when dealing with kids.
Heading Back to School
Back to school was one of the most exciting times for me when I was younger. I was always so excited to see what a new school year would bring and the fun activities that I would get to experience with my classmates. What I would be most excited for was to get back with all of my classmates that I missed all summer long.
