Happy Father's Day sign

Our Safe Kids dads share advice that helps them be great fathers.

The Doubtful Dad: Sportsmanship Blog

If you're one of those parents who insists on yelling at the officials during your kid’s sporting event, let me start by saying, you’re right. OK? The kid probably did travel. That was a total strike. It was definitely icing. Obvious pass interference. But that doesn’t make up for all the ways we’re wrong.

Doubtful Dad Dog Park

I love the dog park.

I love it because Halea, my dog (a very rare breed of mutt), loves it. She runs and plays and sniffs, and for 30 minutes every day, I feel like I'm actually giving her the attention she deserves.

I love it because of what I see when I'm there. All different kinds, shapes, and sizes of dogs playing together. They don't worry or judge or take things too seriously.

Role Model Video BlogRole Model Video Blog

My 15-year-old son recently got his learner’s permit. Enjoy this video, with several more examples of how our kids are watching more than we think.

Change every diaper. That’s my first piece of advice for one of my best friends, Muppus, who just had a healthy baby boy. (We call him Muppus because that was the name of his band in high school.) I’ve benefited from the advice of Muppus on so many extremely important things – like how to build the perfect fort — so I thought sharing all the things I learned as a parent of two boys might be a nice way to pay him back.

Boating Safety Week Tips

Whether it’s in motorboats, sailboats, kayaks or canoes, there’s a good chance most of us will be hanging out in some kind of boat this spring or summer. After all, it’s one of the best ways for family and friends to spend time together and experience the freedom that comes from cruising on lakes, rivers and oceans.

Car seats like this one save lives

One of the best parts of my job at Safe Kids is working with families who generously share their stories to inspire other parents to get involved. The following story is one of my favorites because it really shows what our work is all about – the little things you can do that can make a big difference.

Teen driver behind the wheel

This month the National Safety Council is observing Distracted Driving Awareness Month and giving us all an important reminder of the potentially tragic consequences to driving while talking or texting. The Council is asking all drivers to stop using cell phones while they drive.

Smiling Boy

From the moment our babies start to crawl, the world is a magical place filled with new adventures and discoveries. We want to create an environment where kids have the freedom to explore and discover and have fun. That means taking a few precautions around the house to minimize the risk of serious injuries.

Cover of the Last Akaway book

Every December, my family piles into our 2001 minivan (275,000 miles and counting) and heads to Buffalo to visit my mother-in-law. I call her “Grammy Yes” because whenever my kids asked Grammy a question, the answer was always, “yes.”

“Yes, you can have chocolate-covered potato chips for breakfast.”

“Yes, you can stay up as late as you want.”
