When I was just 12 years old, I attended a neighborhood pool party with a few families from our street. There were kids of all ages, with the youngest being around the age of 2. As the adults gathered in the shallow end of the pool, one mother was with her young toddler. She placed the young girl on a pool noodle as a floatation device. Her mom had a false perception that with so many people around, her child would be safe.

Sadly, she was wrong.

playground safety week 2015

As the weather gets warmer, more kids will be playing outdoors and visiting playgrounds – running and jumping, climbing and swinging.

This week is National Playground Safety Week, so it’s the perfect time to review some safety tips and talk with your children about being safe while having fun on the playground.

Car seats like this one save lives

One of the best parts of my job at Safe Kids is working with families who generously share their stories to inspire other parents to get involved. Here's the information I want every family to know. Children are falling from windows at an alarming rate – more than 3,300 kids five and under go to the emergency every year. Window falls are a completely preventable.  All windows should have window guards, child safe window stops or 4-inch window opening limiters.  We recommend Guardian Angel window guards, KidCo window stops or KidCo mesh window guards because these all meet ASTM safety standards.
